Panthers hoist the trophy at MIVA Division II Championship

HAMMOND, Ind. - This past weekend, teams from all five of MIVA's conferences met in Hammond, Indiana, to battle for the coveted MIVA Championships at the D1, D2, D3, and Women's divisions, bringing in over 100 teams for the weekend.

The DU men's volleyball team went an undefeated 5-0 on the way to claiming the MIVA Division 2 Championship and improved their overall record to 33-4 this season.

On Saturday, the Panthers won the top pool in their division beating Tiffin (25-20, 25-10, 25-15) and Cedarville (25-18, 25-16, 17-25), setting them up as the overall top seed for the championship bracket on Sunday.

Bracket play highlighted the incredible all-around ability and hustle of Panther setter Tristan Whitman as he averaged 10 assists and one block per set. In the quarterfinals, the Panthers outlasted the eighth-seed Ohio Northern squad (25-23, 25-22). The semifinals brought the fourth-seeded Xavier Musketeers, who beat Davenport in the finals of these championships last year. After resetting their focus and drive, the Panthers swept an over-matched Xavier team (25-16, 25-17), hitting .429 for the match, while putting up eight total blocks defensively. Logan Sowers delivered an impressive five aces and James May led the balanced offensive attack with eight kills. Cedarville was back for one more shot at the Panthers in the finals. Gavin Vandergraaf's 10 kills coupled with Jackson Palmitier's five aces proved overwhelming for the Yellow Jackets as they fell in straight sets (25-18, 25-13).
