Harris runs wild in 32-20 season-opening win over Gannon

The Panthers rushed for a school-record 420 yards

CALEDONIA, Mich. — Davenport football (1-0) secured a season-opening 32-20 victory over Gannon University (0-1) on Saturday at Richard J. Pappas Stadium. The Panthers' rushing attack was dominant, amassing 420 yards and three touchdowns, including an 84-yard run by Cephus Harris in the third quarter.

Davenport capitalized on a forced fumble caused by Josh McKnight, recovered by Kevin Underwood, to seize momentum in the first quarter. Harris powered the offense with 107 rushing yards on nine attempts in the first quarter, including a 22-yard gain that set up his 10-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead. The Panthers' defense held Gannon to 25 rushing yards and forced the fumble, contributing to a 7-0 lead at the end of the period.

Gannon initially tied the game with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Ty Hurst to Donell Mason, followed by a successful extra point at the 10:07 mark of the second quarter. However, Davenport responded with a balanced offensive drive, highlighted by Jonathan Palmer's 17-yard touchdown pass to Kayden Collins, his first as a Panther. Palmer accounted for 88 passing yards in the quarter, contributing significantly to the Panthers' 14-7 halftime advantage.

Davenport established some breathing room on the first play of the third quarter with Harris's 75-yard touchdown run for a 20-7 lead. Harris wasn't done there as he later ripped off a 84-yard touchdown with 4:07 left in the quarter for a 27-7 lead. Harris had five carries for 165 yards and two scores in the third quarter alone. On defense, Davenport effectively contained the Golden Knights, allowing just 23 rushing yards and forcing two punts.

The Panthers maintained their lead in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on a strong rushing attack. Gannon scored early in the fourth quarter to make it 27-14. Harris spearheaded the ground game with a 33-yard run, contributing to Davenport's 87 rushing yards in the period. The Panthers got a 27-yard field goal by Ian Jenkins for a 30-14 lead with 6:30 left to play. The Golden Knights converted on a fourth-and-21 due to a pass interference in the end zone on the next drive. Moments later, Hurst did the "tush push" for a one-yard touchdown to make it 30-20. Gannon went for a two-point conversion, but Bellamy intercepted the pass and returned it the other way for two points and the final tally of 32-20.

Harris delivered an impressive performance, rushing for 351 yards on 26 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Palmer was consistent through the air, completing 9 of 15 passes for 100 yards and one touchdown, while also adding 46 rushing yards on six attempts. Kayden Collins played a key role in the passing game with four receptions for 48 yards, including a touchdown. On the defensive side, Markell Gilford led with eight tackles, and Christian Cramer matched with eight tackles of his own. Bellamy finished with six tackles, two tackles for loss, and one sack.
