Phil Sweeney

Phil Sweeney will be transitioning into his role as Hockey Recruiting Coordinator beginning in the 2021-22 school year. Sweeney spent 10 seasons as the head coach of the Davenport ACHA Division I men's hockey program picking up 226 wins and has been associated with Davenport hockey since 2005. Sweeney's program was a model of consistency reaching the ACHA National Tournament every year as a head coach. The team also placed first or second in the GLCHL standings eight times during his tenure. Sweeney also served as assistant coach from 2005-11 prior to being named the head coach. He currently is the Ice Arena Manager at Kentwood Ice Arena and is also head coach of the East Kentwood High School program.

Phil also served as the head coach at the Bantam AA level, in the GRAHA organization for two years. He also served as an assistant coach on Team Michigan U-14 team in 2008. Phil played for the University of Kentucky for two years and was the head coach for two years after playing.

During his time as an assistant under head coach Paul Lowden, Phil helped build Davenport into the premier ACHA hockey program that has been highlighted by four consecutive national championships (three at the D2 level and one at the D1 level).  Phil’s roles on the team were to help oversee the offense, work with the special teams, and he also worked as a tireless recruiter as an assistant coach.

Phil also serves as one of the Head Instructors for the Drills, Skills, and Thrills summer hockey camp through GRAHA.  He has participated in many hockey camps, as an instructor and as a speaker over the years and has achieved his level 4 coaching level through USA Hockey.
