James Wood

James Wood is in his second year as the head coach and fifth year in the program after serving as an assistant coach for Davenport's men's rugby program. Wood will continue to be the overseer of all strength and conditioning needs. 

He led the Panthers to a 15-8 season in 2014-15 season including the first Mid-South Conference win in program history. He also guided the Panthers to the D1A Rugby National Semifinals and runner-up finish at the USA 7s College National Championship.

Wood received his undergraduate degree in movement science from Grand Valley State University in 2007 and a Master of Science distinction in human movement with an emphasis in sports conditioning at A.T. Still University.  

Wood competed at the collegiate level as a member of the Grand Valley State University RFC and later moved on to play for Grand Rapids Gazelles RFC. He has represented the state of Michigan at the collegiate and men’s club levels, as well as the Midwest in the rugby 7s format. 

Wood’s coaching experience dates back to 2003 where he worked at his high school alma mater of Rockford, helping lead the team to its first State Championship in 2008.

Wood currently resides in Cedar Springs with his wife Elaine and his sons Hudson and Ryder.
