Scott Lucas became the head coach of the wrestling programs in September 2022. Since taking the program's lead, Lucas became the first coach in DU's history to have a wrestler (Manuel Leija) reach the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships and be named an All-American. He also oversaw the efforts to merge the program from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) while bolstering the scholarship opportunities for student-athletes by a nearly 50% increase and growing both the men's and women's teams over time.
He has coached for over two decades and has recent experience as the head coach at Cleary University in Howell, Michigan from 2016-18. He started the program as they were heading towards their inaugural season as a member of the NAIA. He has also served as head coach at Washtenaw Community College and had a seven-year stint as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University.
Aside from his stint at EMU, Lucas, who has coached at all levels from youth to college, was the youth wrestling coach at Webberville Community Schools in 2018. He also has worked with youth programs in Bangor (Maine), Whitmore Lake, Dexter, Farmington and Westland John Glenn.
Lucas wrestled himself at Michigan State University from 1985-87 and while a member of the City of Westland Fire Department, he competed in the National Police and Fire Sports Festival Championships winning a gold medal in 1996. He also won seven medals in eight World Police and Fire Games in freestyle wrestling over the years. A retired professional fire chief, he now is the managing director of Firefighter Strong, LLC based out of Williamston.
Lucas earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Leadership from Concordia University (Mich.) in 2008 and received his graduate certificate from the Center for Regional and National Security in the School of Fire Staff and Command from Eastern Michigan University in 2009.
