The women's volleyball team made huge strides in only its second season, but tonight's loss against Cornerstone University ends the Panthers season short of one its main goals. The Golden Eagles now advance on to the WHAC Final Four and DU ends its season with an overall record of 11-28 after falling in three games (20-30, 27-30, 12-30).
The match started out exactly as the Panthers had hoped as they stayed right with the 37-4 Golden Eagles. CU then used a few runs of their own to take a comfortable lead before DU battled back to end game one at 30-20. Davenport would not back down though as they came out strong in game two and led 26-24 but a few costly errors proved too much to overcome as they fell 30-27. Game three was tough to come out mentally and the agressiveness of Cornerstone showed as they opened a lead too large to overcome, closing the match and ultimately the Panthers season 30-12.
Davenport was led in kills by Joyce Larioza and Autumn Williams as they both posted eight on the night. Kayla Vandermolen dished out 27 assists and Williams led the team in digs with 11. With the new recruiting class next year that head coach Rick Rykse expects to join a team with no seniors, the Panthers will look to make even bigger strides in 2008.
