Panthers Unable to Finish Saints; Aquinas Soars Back for 3-2 Win

Oct. 16, 2008

Box Score

Caledonia, Mich. - For the second time this season, Aquinas and Davenport battled to the fifth and final set only to see the same result. Aquinas came back from down 2-1 to win sets four and five to deal the Panthers another tough loss.

Aquinas came into the match off a tough loss to Indiana Tech and Davenport entered also on the heels of a loss and the Saints started the match as good as a team can play. AQ took the first set 25-11 as they hit for a .400 hitting percentage and did not allow the Panthers to get into any rythym at all. DU soared back in set two though and behind the swings of Megan Vanderhyde and Kailey Schultz evened the match with the 25-21 victory.

With the momentum on their side, the Panthers dominated set three as their offense clicked and did not allow the Saints to get into their offensive system and DU took a 2-1 lead with the 25-14 win. With only one win remaining to take the match, DU struggled once again in set four and the Saints offense was again the story. AQ pounded 12 kills in the set as they pulled away late for the 25-19 win.

With the match on the line in the decisive set, Aquinas started hot and used a 4-0 run to start to gain the early momentum. DU responded though with a kill from Heather Deal, but again Aquinas ran off three straight points to take the 7-1 lead which led to a DU timeout. The Panthers got hot out of the timeout and went on a 5-3 run to get within four at 10-6 but it would be as close as they would get as Aquinas closed the match 15-7.

Megan Vanderhyde and Heather Deal both posted double-digits in kills with 15 and 11 respectively and Courtney DePriest was solid on defense with 19 digs.

The loss drops DU to 11-19 on the year and 2-6 in WHAC play. They now sit in a tie for 5th place with UM Dearborn in the conference standings. Davenport will host its first official HOME MATCH on Tuesday, October 21 when they welcome Indiana Tech to the Student Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
