Panthers Fall in WHAC Quarterfinals; Season Comes to a Close

Nov. 11, 2008

Box Score

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Davenport entered the WHAC Tournament looking to make its first ever appearance in the WHAC Final Four, but Cornerstone defended their home court for a 3-1 victory. The loss ends the season for the Panthers with an overall record of 15-26.

Davenport defeated the Golden Eagles last week in a thrilling 5-set match, but were unable to get into any rythym tonight as they fell in sets one, two and four. The opening set was dominated by the host Eagles as they raced out to a 5-1 lead before playing steady for the 25-17 win.

The Panthers came out strong in the second set after falling behind 3-0 early and held a slim advantage for a majority of the set, but hitting errors and serving errors doomed them as CU posted the 25-21 win after being tied at 20. With their season on the line for every set, Davenport's offense finally hit their stride and posted 15 kills to only 9 from the Eagles and DU forced a 4th game with a 25-22 win.

The offense clicked again to start set four, but quickly went away and the hitting errors were again a thorn in the Panthers side as Cornerstone completed the 3-1 victory with a 25-19 win.

Kailey Schultz and Megan Vanderhyde ended their outstanding freshman campaign's with 14 and 11 kills respectively and Courtney DePriest and Autumn Williams led the defense with 18 digs each.

Davenport finishes the season at 15-26 with a bright future ahead of them as only two players will graduate from this year's team.
