Dearborn, Mich. - The women's volleyball season officially kicked off today for a young Panthers squad at the UM Dearborn Early Bird Tournament. Davenport showed its inexperience in both matches as they fell to #25 Mt. Vernon Nazarene and Bethel College.

In the opening match of the 2008 season, DU found themselves matched up against the 25th ranked Cougars of Mt. Vernon Nazarene who were coming off an impressive 35-8 year of 2007. The first five points went all in Davenport's way as they used key blocks and aggressive attacks to take the early momentum. Unfortunately the Cougars would respond and go on to win 25-21 with both teams having a chance down the stretch. Game two was a see-saw battle until Mt. Vernon used a 5-point stretch to open up a 19-14 lead as they would go on to win 25-18. Game three was tight early on but another tough stretch doomed the Panthers while going on to lose game three 25-13. Final game scores were 21-15, 18-25, 13-25.

Autumn Williams (Fruitport, MI) led the team with 10 kills and Kayla Vandermolen (Cedar Springs, MI) dished out 24 assists. Freshman Courtney DePriest (Grand Rapids, MI) posted her first double-digit digs with 17.

In the second match of the day, DU took on Bethel College of the MCC. The Pilots took control of game one early but DU rallied to get within two at 16-18. The passing hurt down the stretch as Bethel pulled away for a 25-20 victory. Game two was what DU was expecting out of its young team as they used a balanced attack and great serve receive to take firm control of the game at 24-18. Unfortunately the last point is always the toughest to get and Bethel rallied to tie the game at 24 all with six straight points and would eventually go on to win the game 27-25. The Panthers did not fall over in game three but lost a close 25-17 game which brings their overall season record to 0-2. Finals game scores were 20-25, 25-27, 17-25.

Davenport will take the court at UM Dearborn on Saturday twice more against Ohio Dominican and Trinity International.
