Grand Rapids, Mich. - The women's volleyball team opened up WHAC play last night and came out on the short end of an exciting 5-set match with Aquinas. DU was unable to hold off the Saints in the deciding game as they dropped to 6-13 on the year and 0-1 in WHAC play.
In a battle of two teams that are trying to push their way on to the WHAC volleyball scene, each team gave everything it had on Tuesday night. Aquinas used a late rally in set one after trading points with the Panthers for the first ten points. They used a strong offensive attack to go up 1-0 with a 25-19 victory. Set two was much different though as it was a battle to the very last point as DU escaped to tie the match at 1-1 with a 26-24 win. Knowing how important the tie-breaking set is in a best out of five match, each team put up a great fight in the 3rd set as neither team boasted a lead of more than three points and with the score tied at 21, Aquinas ran off four straight points to give them a one set advantage.
DU was determined to force a fifth and deciding set and that they did after trailing early in set four by rallying for a 25-20 victory. The final set was all Davenport for the opening 13 points as the Panthers jumped out to a 9-4 lead only to see the Saints come right back to score 11 of the final 15 points to take the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
With the loss, DU falls to 6-13 on the year and 0-1 in conference play. They will look to rebound when they travel to undefeated Indiana Tech on Thursday for a WHAC contest with the Warriors at 7:00 PM.
