Upland, Ind. - Elfid Kovacevic knew he had to step up this season with the loss of many key seniors to graduation this past year and after three games the senior from Grandville, MI has led the Panthers to a perfect 3-0-0 record.
Kovacevic, who was named to the All-WHAC team as a sophomore but endured a season full of injuries as a junior, has come out of the gates on fire for the Panthers as he posted two more goals in the team's 3-1 victory over Taylor University on Saturday afternoon.
Davenport, which dominated Indiana Wesleyan 6-2 on Friday night, jumped out to a quick lead just 9:34 into the game when Efrain Hernandez crossed a ball that Kovacevic put by the Trojan keeper to put DU on top 1-0. The Panthers and Trojans each would have their chances for the remainder of the opening half, but both defenses kept the ball out of the net.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Kovacevic again was big for DU as he got the assist on a beautiful goal from Efrain Hernandez (Holland, MI). Elfid would go on to add his second goal of the game and 5th of the weekend just 10 minutes later off a pass from Bryant Roos (Kentwood, MI) to give DU a commanding 3-0 lead.
Taylor, which will be one of the favorites in the always tough MCC, did not go away as they got on the scoreboard in the 77th minute which put a little scare into the Panthers but DU hung on for the 3-1 victory.
Davenport improves to 3-0-0 on the year as they will now travel to NCAA D3 Kalamazoo College for a matchup with the Hornets on Wednesday, September 10 at 4:00 PM.
