MARION, Ind. - A morning five set victory over St. Xavier (Ill.) followed by a close 4-set loss to #23 Taylor leaves the Davenport volleyball team at 12-12 heading into next week. The Panthers will travel to Aquinas College (Forest Hills Northern HS) on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
After sweeping Ohio Dominican and Indiana Wesleyan in straight sets on Friday night, the Panthers posted a thrilling five-set victory over St. Xavier in the morning before falling in a ver close match to #23 Taylor in the match that pitted the only two undefeated teams in the tourney.
In the opening match against St. Xavier, Davenport avenged an earlier season loss with a 5-set victory. DU fell in a close 25-27 set one, but rallied to firmly win the next two 25-16, 25-21 before falling 25-21 in the fourth. The Panthers however regrouped and took the match with a 15-11 win in the final set.
Three Panthers (Joyce Larioza, Ashley Penny and Kassie Graves) all posted double-digits in kills as they finished with 11, 11 and 13 respectively.
The second match featured the #23 ranked Trojans of Taylor and after falling pretty hard in the first two sets, DU rebounded for a nice 25-20 win before falling 25-23 in the fourth.
Kayla Vandermolen (Cedar Springs, Mich.) finished with a game high 44 assists and Courtney DePriest (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Gina Turner (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished with 15 and 14 digs each.
DU will return to the court on Tuesday when they travel to Forest Hills Northern HS to take on Aquinas College in a critical WHAC matchup beginning at 7:00 PM.
