GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - David Thompson was named Tournament MVP as he led his team to a 73-51 win in the championship game of the Panther Invitational over Grace Bible. Davenport is now 2-0 on the year and will travel to Southern Nazarene (Okla.) next weekend for two games.
After two early free-throws from Grace Bible, DU ran off the game's next eight points and never trailed their opponent Grace Bible who came into the game ranked #1 in the country in their respective division.
The lead would grow to as many as 15 in the opening half when Lonnie Fairfax (Livonia, Mich.) made a short jump shot. Fairfax's two points were part of his 14 off the bench for DU in route to being named to the All-Tournament Team.
After trading baskets for the remainder of the half, DU led 36-23 heading into the final 20 minutes.
Grace opened the half with a long three-pointer and a layup off a DU turnover to cut the lead to 10 but that would be as close as they got the remainder of the game as the lead hovered between 11-20.
DU built their largest lead of 24 late in the game when Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) made two free throws to give Davenport a 71-47 lead.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Cox and Fairfax joined teammate David Thompson (Grandville, Mich.) on the All-Tournament Team in which Thompson was named the MVP. Over a two game span, the junior guard scored 26 points and finished with a pair of assists and 6 steals.
DU is now 2-0 on the year and will travel to Oklahoma for the Southern Nazarene Tournament that begins on Friday.
