Box Score
TEMPE, Ariz. - A slow start and slow finish led to a 6-3 defeat for the Panthers tonight in Tempe as they fell to the host Sun Devils of Arizona State. DU will now take on Lindenwood (ACHA D1 #1) on Tuesday night at 9:30 PM EST.
The game started out slow for Davenport as a defensive miscue led to the Sun Devils first goal just 1:41 into the game. DU came back at the 13:00 mark to tie the score when Marc Thompson (Traverse City, Mich.) scored on a great hustle play.
The Sun Devils would add a late goal with less than 2:00 to play in the first as they led DU 2-1 after the first 20 minutes.
The second period was all offense and not a lot of defense as the teams combined for four goals leaving the score at a one goal advantage for ASU. Scoring the two goals for the Panthers was Sean McWhorter (Lansing, Mich.), but it was the play of the ASU netminder that became the difference.
Late in the second period when it looked as if DU was gaining control, the Sun Devils goaltender stopped everything from there on out as he ended up with 54 saves on the night as the Panthers outshot the SunDevils 57-27.
Two goals in the third period (one empty netter) led to the Panthers eventual 6-3 defeat and their second straight loss.
DU will now hope to rebound against probably the best ACHA team in the nation when they take on Lindenwood University on Tuesday night at 9:30 PM EST. The game will again be broadcast live on the DAN.
