GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport ACHA Division I men's hockey team split a pair of games against Indiana Tech over the weekend. The Panthers flexed their muscle on Friday afternoon with a 6-2 win in Fort Wayne, but could not duplicate that effort on Saturday at Patterson Ice Center with a 6-5 overtime loss to the Warriors.
The Panthers erupted in the first period on Friday with four goals against Indiana Tech.
Anthony Ott started things off at 2:16 with his third goal of the season from
Gabe Olenzuk and
Ryan Blackburn.
Benny Mielock advanced the lead to 2-0 at 7:38 with his second goal of the season from Logan Skyperman, who got his first assist at the Division I level.
Sammy Mielock less than a minute later made it 3-0 on an unassisted goal for his fifth of the season.
Jack Kelly increased the lead to 4-0 at 11:37 with his fifth of the season from Ott and
Jake Alton. Indiana Tech ended the four-goal streak at 12:56 as Isaiah Gagerman scored his first of the season from Michael Dalaly.
The scoring slowed down in the final two periods, but Davenport advanced their lead to 6-1 in the second period.
Sammy Mielock got his second goal of the game at 4:29 from
Ethan Wallace and then
Logan Martinelli hit the lamp for the first time this season at 13:46 from
Matt Carlson. Ryan Doucette scored the only goal in the third period for the Warriors at 6:01.
Paul Jarvis got the start in net for the Panthers and finished with 33 saves.
Saturday's rematch saw ITU fire 33 shots on goal compared to 32 for Davenport. The Panthers could not take more advantage on the power play going just 1-for-7. The penalty kill however was perfect in five chances for the Warriors.
Tony Kauffman got things going at 4:06 of the first period with his second tally of the season from
Dylan Jouppi. JP Scaringi tied it up at 8:42 for the Warriors, but DU would score the last two goals of the period.
Benny Mielock netted his third of the season at 9:41 from
Luke Mikkola and then at 10:52 it was
Jake Alton on the power play unassisted for his fourth goal of the campaign.
Zane Myler and Gagerman scored in a successful period for Indiana Tech to cut the deficit to 3-3 heading into the final period. ITU took their first lead of the game at 8:06 as Ivan Khyrsa scored his first of the season from Scaringi. Carlson knotted things up at 4-4 at the 10:27 mark for his third of the season.
Mason Bazaluk scored at 18:00 to give Indiana Tech a 5-4 lead from Connor Funke and Broderik Burge. The Panthers would empty their net in the final minute and it would pay off.
Sammy Mielock jammed home a rebound with 16 seconds left in regulation from Mikkola and Carlson to send it into overtime.
In overtime, Alton took an interference penalty at 2:23 and it took just 15 seconds for the Warriors to net the winner. Doucette fired a wrist shot to the top left corner on the 4-on-3 advantage.
Kyler Lowden stopped 27 shots for Davenport in net.
Next up will be a weekend series against Western Michigan starting on Friday, Oct. 9 at Patterson Ice Center with a 8:35 pm puck drop.
