LYNCHBURG, Va. - Behind the strength of three 3rd period goals, the Panthers outlasted the Flames 7-4 in front of a packed audience at the LaHaye Ice Center. The Panthers' sticks never stopped shooting the puck on goal as Davenport outshot Liberty 56-17 in the contest.
Matt Morang got the Panthers on the board first as he fired a shot from the slot past the LU netminder. Despite out-shooting the host Flames 19-7 in the first frame, the Flames found a way to connect on their lethal powerplay, tying the game at one shortly before the first intermission.
Despite giving up the lead on an early goal, Sean McWhorter connected on a powerplay goal after a Brit Ouellette shot rang off the near post.
The Flames made their few shots count as the Panthers found themselves down again by a 4-2 score. After a slew of penalties, Brit Ouellette made Liberty pay as he netted two powerplay goals to tie the game at four heading into the final period.
Not to let a replay of last season occur (7-6 OTL), the Panthers shutout the Flames in the third period. Two goals by Matt Morang, and one from Adam Kuhn sealed the Flames' fate as the Panthers clamped down defensively to secure the victory.
Defensively, Kevin Brojek blocked numerous Flames' scoring chances while goaltender Joe D'Elia added another victory to his record while recording 13 saves. Forward Brit Ouellette and defenseman Jeff Slusser led the Panthers with a +2 rating.
The win lifts Davenport to 4-1 on the season as they will face the Flames again on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm. The Panthers also raise their all-time record against Liberty to 8-9-0 with the win.
