LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Panthers completed the weekend sweep over the tenth-ranked Liberty University with a 6-2 win on Saturday afternoon. Davenport evened their career record to 9-9-0 against the Flames and 5-1-0 overall in 2010-2011 heading into a two-game series at Ohio University in Athens, OH.
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Jonathon Juliano (Clinton Twp, Mich.) scored a short-handed goal off a brilliant pass by Brit Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) that was initiated by Kevin Brojek (Sterling Heights, Mich.). Goaltender Phil Graveline (Marshall, Mich.) made many beautiful saves to shutout the Flames in the first period.
In the second period, the Panthers again came out of the gates flying as Justin Smith (Sarnia, Ontario) beat a Flame defender one-on-one and ripped a shot glove-side to double the Panthers' lead to 2-0. Later in the period, Bobby Collar (Brighton, Mich.) one-timed a Smith pass by the LU netminder to secure the game-winning goal.
After Liberty began to close the gap, Tyler Forbes (Toronto, Ontario) pocketed a pair of goals to put the game out of reach. To finish the scoring, freshman Trevor Cope (Flint, Mich.) recorded his first goal as a Panther and Phil Graveline's stellar goaltending was highlighted by multiple "highlight reel" saves.
The Panthers next take the ice at #3 Ohio University on October 8.
