GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Lady Panthers got back on the winning track tonight with a three set win over visiting Concordia on Senior Night. The win lifts DU to 18-12 on the year and they will be in action next on Tuesday when they travel to Aquinas.
Davenport tied a school record for wins in a season tonight as they collected their 18th of the year which equals the mark of the 2009 squad. Davenport cruised to the three set win by getting victories 25-13, 25-14 and 25-18.
In the opening set, DU took a 2-2 score and went on a 9-1 run to open an eight point lead as junior Courtney DePriest served back to back aces. The lead grew to as many as 11 as the Lady Panthers got three kills on three attempts from junior Jennifer Brunink.
Set two was closer for the beginning but after DU fell behind early 1-2, they put together runs of 15-7 and 9-5 to close out the Cardinals. During the convincing win, DU received four kills each from Nicole Chase and Kassie Graves.
The third set was much more of a back and forth affair as the Lady Panthers struggled with passing and serving. Concordia was able to stay within 3-4 points for most of the first part but a 9-2 run opened the set wide open that eventually ended 25-18.
The night marked the final home regular season match of the seniors for DU: Ashley Penny, Kayla Vandermolen, Sami Hausmann, Yurika Toyodome and Joyce Larioza.
Vandermolen led Davenport with a team high 23 assists and Penny was third on the team in kills with six on the night. Sophomore Kassie Graves finished the night with a team high eight kills and also finished with 11 digs.
Davenport will now travel to Aquinas on Tuesday for a matchup with the Saints. Game time is set for 7:00pm inside the new field-house for AQ.
