GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -
Philip Tesoriero scored what turned out to be the game winner with 13:25 remaining in the final period to lift the sluggish Panthers to a 3-1 victory over UM-Dearborn in GLCHL play. The win is the tenth of the year for Davenport as they travel to Oklahoma next weekend.
Davenport posted a 7-4 victory on Friday night in their annual homecoming game and followed it up with a 3-1 win highlighted by a two goal third period over the Wolves.
Dearborn got the scoring started in a first period that DU dominated on the shots but not on the scoreboard as the Wolves took the lead in the final seconds on a power play.
As DU continued to pile on the shots in the second period, the finally broke through when
Ben Dykstra (Kentwood, Mich.) scored with only 2:35 remaining on assists from
Jeff Slusser (Kentwood, Mich.) and
Sean McWhorter (Lansing, Mich.) The period ended with the score knotted at one goal a piece.
Looking to claim their third sweep of a Top-25 opponent in their first five series, DU came out fast again in the third and
Philip Tesoriero (Boulder, Colo.) scored an unassisted goal to put the Panthers up 2-1. UMD then was forced to pull their goalie late in the period and DU countered with a goal from
Jonathon Juliano (Clinton Twp, Mich.). The assist was credited to
Brit Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) as the captain continues to lead the team in helpers.
The win lifts DU to 10-2 on the year as they recently moved to #2 in the Top-25 poll. Davenport will travel to Oklahoma next weekend to take on the Sooners on Thursday night. OU is currently ranked #3 in the polls. The Panthers will also take on Central Oklahoma on Friday and Saturday. UCO is ranked #17 in the latest poll released by the ACHA this past weekend.
