ADRIAN, Mich. - A slow start was not enough to keep Davenport from picking up a road win at Siena Heights on Tuesday to finish the regular season 21-15 overall. DU dropped set one 25-23 but rebounded to defeat the Saints 25-13, 25-16, 25-14.
In their final match of the regular season, Davenport picked up a key road win and will enter the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament next week with an overall mark of 21-15 as the #5 seed. DU will take on NW Ohio in the quarterfinals next Tuesday in Lima, OH.
As for the match on Tuesday, Davenport struggled in the opening set as their slow start led to a 25-23 setback to the Saints inside the SHU Fieldhouse. After DU rallied to tie the score at 23 all, the Saints scored the final two points to eek out the win.
A more determined Panthers squad returned the court in the second and took full control of the match as they took a 7-5 lead and extended it to 18-9 led by two kills each from
Brittany Bott (Hudsonville, Mich.),
Nicole Chase (Caledonia, Mich.) and
Kassie Graves (White Cloud, Mich.). DU wound up closing out SHU 25-13.
The second set featured much of the same as Davenport again jumped out early and extended their lead to as many as nine and won 25-16. DU posted a hittting percentage of .375 in the set as they posted 16 kills on just 32 attempts with four errors.
Looking to close out Siena Heights in the fourth set, senior
Kayla Vandermolen (Cedar Springs, Mich.) got the Lady Panthers started off with a 7-1 run highlighted by two aces. Sophomore
Kelse Moon (Fremont, Mich.) then took over as the right side hitter posted seven kills on eight attempts at an .857 clip. DU dominated from start to finish as they won 25-14.
Leading the way offensively for DU was sophomore
Brittany Bott (Hudsonville, Mich.) (Hudsonville, Mich.) who posted 16 kills at a .353 hitting percentage. No other player posted double digits but five chipped in with at least six kills.
Courtney DePriest (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was solid on defense as the junior finished with 30 digs.
DU will now have one week off to prepare for the post-season in which they will play at Northwestern Ohio in the opening round of the WHAC Tournament. Game time will be announced later this week.
