GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Nathan Cox had his third straight twenty point game for DU to lead the Panthers to a 82-73 victory over Goshen College in a non-conference match-up. Davenport is now 3-0 on the year and will be back in action at home on Saturday against Ohio Christian.
In the first half Davenport and Goshen would trade baskets for the first ten minutes of the game. DU would start to build a small lead around the nine minute mark behind a three pointer from freshman Zach Yeagy (Alexandria, Ind.), followed up by a lay-up from Cox and then another three pointer from Gabe VanderJagt (Rockford, Mich.).
Goshen would continue to fight tying the game up at 27-27 at the 4:46 minute mark, but that would be as close as they would get for the rest of the game. Davenport would build a seven point lead before halftime with a buzzer beater from Lonnie Fairfax to give DU the 36-29 lead at half.
Davenport would come out hot in the second half behind strong rebounding and James Nelson (New Haven, Mich.) 15 of his 17 points coming in the 2nd twenty minutes. DU started out with a quick 9-0 run to extend their lead to 16 and would maintain the cushion and extend it to as much as 19 leading into the final three minutes of the game.
Goshen would hit a couple of keys baskets on Panther miscues and opportunities from the free throw line to cut Panther lead down to nine but Davenport would hold on for their straight victory.
Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) would finish the game with a team high 23 (a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line) and eleven rebounds. Nelson would finish with 17 points, 7 rebounds and VanderJagt would hit double digits in scoring as well with 10.
Overall the Panthers would out rebound the Maple Leafs 48-29 while shooting 55.6% from behind the arch.
Davenport will be back at the DU Student Center on Saturday when they take on Ohio Christian in a 12pm match-up with the Women's Basketball Panther Invitational to follow.
