Panthers Head to WHAC Championship Game with 3-1 Win over Cornerstone

Win is school record 14th of the season; breaks old mark of 13 set in 2005

Box Score
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A school record 14th win sends the men's soccer team into the WHAC Championship game for the second year in a row and fourth time in school history.  Davenport defeated rival Cornerstone 3-1 in Tuesday's semifinals.

Playing in front of a great crowd at night under the lights lifted the emotion from the very beginning and Davenport took full control of some great ball posession to post a 3-1 win over the Golden Eagles.

The Panthers had two very good chances early as David Wood (Middlesborough, UK) and Bryant Roos (Kentwood, Mich.) just missed on short opportunities in front of the CU net.  DU finally broke through when David Wood (Middlesborough, UK) found Jordan Richards (Northampton, England) behind the CU defense and the freshman put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead just 14 minutes in.

The lead doubled just 3:41 later when senior Alex Boehm (Stevensville, Mich) continued his outstanding season by notching his ninth goal on a pass from David Wood (Middlesborough, UK) that Boehm played off his chest down to his foot and by the CU keeper.

The score looked like it would stay 2-0 heading into halftime but some sloppy play on the defense for Davenport allowed a Cornerstone man to slip in and put a shot by Kevin O'Brien (Cork, Ireland) to cut the lead in half with just less than four minutes in the opening half.

With a berth in the WHAC Championship game on Saturday against Aquinas on the line, DU came out fast in the second half and increased their lead back to two goals when Alex Boehm (Stevensville, Mich) scored his second of the night as the forward beat his man down the middle of the field.

Kevin O'Brien (Cork, Ireland) then came up with some key saves down the stretch and the defense played very solid to preserve the win over CU.

Davenport now plays at Aquinas on Saturday at 1:00pm with a bid to the NAIA National Tournament on the line.
