LIMA, Ohio - The 2010 volleyball season for Davenport came to an end today with a 3-0 loss to the #4 seed in the WHAC Tournament Northwestern Ohio. The Lady Panthers finished their best season in school history at 21-16 overall.
Davenport (21-16) entered the WHAC Tournament as the #5 seed for the third straight year and for the first time in school history did not play Cornerstone in the opening round. Unfortunately, Davenport ran into an up and coming team in the conference as the Racers of NW-Ohio posted the 3-0 win.
The Lady Panthers jumped out to an early lead in the opening set and led 8-7 after a kill from sophomore
Brittany Bott (Hudsonville, Mich.). The Racers however used a 7-4 run to open a 14-12 lead and never relinquished the lead. Trailing by just one late (18-17), Davenport was unable to overcome the Racers as they eventually fell 25-19.
Set two was much different as UNOH jumped out to a quick lead but Davenport fought back to take a 20-19 lead after a kill from
Nicole Chase (Caledonia, Mich.) and an ace from
Kayla Vandermolen (Cedar Springs, Mich.). DU extended the lead to 22-20 on another ace, this time from
Sami Hausmann (Marne, Mich.), but the Racers responded by outscoring DU 5-1 to end the set and win 25-23.
With their backs to the wall, Davenport was very flat in the third set as UNOH finished the Lady Panthers off 25-13. Davenport's offense was stuck in neutral all night and they managed to just hit .097 in the final set loss.
Leading the way offensively for Davenport was sophomore
Brittany Bott (Hudsonville, Mich.) who finished with 10 kills.
Nicole Chase (Caledonia, Mich.) hit for a .417 clip while posting five kills and senior
Kayla Vandermolen (Cedar Springs, Mich.) finished her career with 27 assists in her final match.
