SIMSBURY, Conn. - Davenport University won its third straight ACHA D2 National Championship tonight defeating Central Connecticut State University 12-4. After finishing a perfect 5-0 in the National Tournament Davenport will ends its season with a 33-15 record.
Jeff Slusser (Kentwood, Mich.) struck first in the game with a goal at the 16:09 mark. Teammate Kevin Brojek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) would add the second goal at the 10:23 mark from Matt Morang (Dearborn, Mich.) and Bobby Collar (Brighton, Mich.). Up 2-0, Central Connecticut would keep the pressure on adding two power play goals in the last five minutes of the first period to tie the game up at 2-2 heading into the second.
DU would come out hot in the second period scoring five goals and only giving up one to take the 7-3 lead. Marc Thompson (Traverse City, Mich.), Brit Ouellette (Windsor, Ont.), Slusser, Sean McWhorter (Lansing, Mich.) and Collar would all be credited with goals.
Up 7-3 the Panthers would keep the heat on in the third scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the period from Adam Thomas (Kentwood, Mich.) and Chad Rutzel (Howell, Mich.). John Stolarz (Grand Haven, Mich.) would be the next Panther to strike to push the lead to 7 from Collar.
Central Connecticut State would add a goal at the 6:40 mark but it was quickly gained back when McWhorter would score for the second time on the night. DU would another goal in the final three minutes to end the game with the 12-4 victory!
