LIVONIA, Mich. - An up and down day saw the DU volleyball team come away with a split as the Lady Panthers defeated the University of Windsor 3-0 after falling in a non-conference match to Madonna 3-1. Davenport is now 7-4 on the year with Rochester and Dearborn on tap for Saturday.
Looking to post their first ever win over conference foe Madonna University, the Lady Panthers and Crusaders entered the match going in opposite directions. DU was coming off wins in four out of their last five matches and MU was on their longest losing streak in almost 20 years at five matches.
The host Crusaders erased those thoughts early with a decisive 25-13 win in the opening set and cruised to a 3-1 win over Davenport. DU did manage to win the second set 25-22, but could not keep the momentum on their side eventually losing 25-19 and 25-18.
DU was led in the match on offense by juniors
Kassie Graves (White Cloud, Mich.) and
Kelse Moon (Fremont, Mich.) who each posted 10 kills. Senior
Kayla Vandermolen (Cedar Springs, Mich.) dished out 34 assists and
Sami Hausmann (Marne, Mich.)and
Courtney DePriest (Grand Rapids, Mich.)led the defense with 14 digs each.
The second match was much better all around for DU as they jumped out early against the University of Windsor and cruised to a 25-16, 25-16, 25-20 win to earn the split on the day.
DU's offense carried the load as they finished the match with a team hitting percentage of .330 led by
Kassie Graves who posted 15 kills on 24 attempts with no errors (.625).
Kelse Moon was also error free as the sophomore chipped in with six kills on 13 attemps.
Nicole Chase (Caledonia, Mich.) and
Joyce Larioza (Fowlerville, Mich.) were both solid as well as the two combined to post 10 kills with two errors on 15 attempts.
Davenport will now take on Rochester College in a rematch from the Wednesday night affair that saw the Lady Panthers win in three sets. DU will then take on another WHAC foe in UM-Dearborn in a match that will be non-conference.
