GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For the second year in a row, the Davenport women's basketball program has been ranked as the #1 team in the country. In the first ranking since mid-December, the Lady Panthers (19-0) received all 15 first place votes while the men's team (16-3) moved up three spots to #16 as voted upon by coaches from around the country.
No. 1 Davenport (19-0, 5-0 WHAC) is riding a 19-game winning streak that has included wins over five ranked opponents in addition to some lopsided victories. En route to the top billing, the Panthers notched road wins over No. 12 Daemen (N.Y.), 104-95 in overtime on Dec. 19 and upset defending national champion and #1 ranked Northwestern (Iowa) at home, 89-80.
Davenport has coasted through its last three games with a 47-point win against Indiana Northwest, a 62-point victory over USCAA's Lindenwood-Belleville and a 96-69 win over Madonna. DU currently ranks second nationally behind Montreat (N.C.) in scoring margin at 27.8, while averaging 94.7 points per game.
"It is exciting when you set goals months and months in advance and you achieve one of them, said DU head coach Mark Youngs when asked what it meant to be ranked #1. We knew this summer we had an immense amount of talent on this team and that if the girls would put the team ahead of personal goals, what we could achieve was limitless."
The men's team, 5-1 since the last ranking and fresh off their first ever victory on the road at Madonna University over the weekend, moved up three spots to #16. The Panthers (16-3, 3-2 WHAC) will host University of Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday in part of a double-header with the women's team.
The #1 ranked Lady Panthers are scheduled to tip off against the Lady Racers at 5:30pm. UNOH's women's team is garnering votes in the poll. The men's game is then scheduled to tip-off at 7:30pm.
Both games will be aired LIVE on the Davenport Athletics Network (DAN) will live audio and stats to go along with the video.
