GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Coming off two straight wins and a tournament championship at Warner University, Davenport continued to stay hot with a 79-55 non-conference victory over Marygrove College. The Panthers are now 15-3 on the year and will resume WHAC play on Saturday.
DU came out firing right from the start as they opened the game with a 12-0 run on the visiting Mustangs. Marygrove would cut the Panther lead down to four at the 10:03 and 7:15 mark in the first but three pointers from JaVontae Ford and Gabe VanderJagt would extend DU's lead back up to 13.
The Panthers would see themselves take a 12 point lead into halftime, after shooting 51% from the field and forcing nine Mustang Turnovers. Ford would lead all scorers at the half with 14 points and a near perfect 4-5 from behind the arc.
Davenport would continue to control the pace of the game as Lonnie Fairfax would add two quick lay-ups to start the second half. James Nelson would score 12 of his 14 points in the second twenty minutes, as DU shot 57% in the half to finish 55% overall from the field.
Accompanying Ford and Nelson in the scoring category was James Humphrey who finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds, shooting 6-9 from the field.
Tonight's 79-55 victory was the final non-conference game for the Panthers as the rest of their schedule will consist of WHAC contests.
