Davenport Completes Sweep of Western Michigan with 10-2 Win on Sunday

Panthers outscore Stallions 32-9 in four game season series

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - #2 ranked Davenport completed the season sweep of their GLCHL rival Western Michigan Stallions with an impressive 10-2 win on Sunday afternoon in Kalamazoo. In the four game series between the two teams, the Panthers outscored WMU 32-9 and improved to 25-5 with the victory.

Davenport picked up their third straight win of the second semester and fourth overall as they improved to 12-2 in conference play with a convincing 10-2 win on the road at Western Michigan.

Davenport started the rare sunday matinée' game very slow and sluggish. The WMU Stallions came out strong and out worked the Panthers for the opening 5 minutes of the game and were rewarded with a goal to take the lead early in the first period. Phil Wendecker (Westland, Mich.) scored two power play goals in a 20 second span to give Davenport the lead which they would never relinquish. Both goals were assisted by Jeff Slusser and Brit Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario). Bobby Collar (Brighton, Mich.) scored the eventual game winner at the 6:21 mark of the first off a great effort from freshman Kyle McDowell (Toronto, Ontario).

The Panthers extended their lead in the second with a PP goal from Kevin Brojek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and a great effort from freshman Sean McKenzie (Howell, Mich.). WMU scored late in the second which ricocheted off a DU defender's stick.

The third period was all Davenport scoring 5 unanswered goals. Gillikin, Ouellette, McWhorter, Juliano and Morang tallied to extend the Panther lead to 10-2 to sweep the three game weekend series and take all four games from WMU on the year.

The second ranked Panthers will now host arch-rival Liberty University next weekend.  The Flames will come to Patterson Ice Center on Friday at 8:30 and Saturday at 7:30.  Both games will be featured live on the DAN with Paul Stabile having the call.
