LIMA, Ohio – Davenport set a new school record for wins in a season today as they picked up victory number 24 with a 75-67 win over Northwestern Ohio.
JaVontae Ford (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the No. 12 Panthers with 20 points as DU will travel to rival Aquinas on Wednesday at 7:30pm.
Playing the Racers on the road for the first time in school history, DU used a 10 point halftime cushion to up their overall record to 24-4 with two games remaining in the regular season. James Nelson (New Haven, Mich.) finished with an 18 point, 8 rebound performance off the bench and Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) chipped in with 18 and four.
The Panthers opened the game with a 9-0 run and never looked back holding a lead of around 10 for most of the game. UNOH did get within one at 13-12 with a 12-4 run of their own, but Davenport stayed in control behind the play of Nelson and Cox for most of the first half.
Davenport went into the locker room with a 12 point margin (40-28) and then scored the opening bucket of the second half from James Humphrey (Fort Wayne, Ind.) to up their lead to 14 which matched the largest of the game.
A late run from the Racers did allow the score to get within single digits, but the outcome was never in doubt as DU picked up their 11th win in conference play for the second straight year.
DU is now two games back of No. 3 Cornerstone University in the league standings with two games to play. A win by DU over Aquinas on Wednesday and a loss by the Eagles would allow the Panthers to play for their first ever regular season title next Saturday on senior day.
The solid defense of the Panthers was again the story as DU once again limited their opponents to just 67 points. During Davenport's current six game winning streak, the Panthers have given up an average of only 58 points per game.
DU will hit the road for the final time during the regular season on Wednesday when they take on Aquinas at 7:30pm.
