GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -The Panthers claimed the Good Luck Duck once again as they completed the series victory over long time rival Oakland University. DU posted a convincing 4-0 win as they have now won the last three games against the Grizzlies after dropping the season opener.
The Panthers came out strong in the first period as Tyler Forbes (Toronto, Ontario) opened the scoring on a breakaway just 56 seconds into the contest. Kevin Brojek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) led Forbes with a beautiful pass to set up the play.
Later the in the period, the Panthers built a 2-0 lead as Brojek unleashed a snapshot from the point beating the OU goaltender up high and that was how the first period ended with DU holding a 2-0 edge.
The Panthers and Grizzlies battled in the second period, but Kyle McDowell's (Toronto, Ontario) patience on a 2-on-1 secured Sean McWhorter (Lansing, Mich.) a one-timer goal to build the lead to 3-0.
The final period saw the Panthers continue their domination as Matt Morang (Dearborn, Mich.) slammed home a rebound with just under 9:00 to play and Davenport secured the victory with solid play down the stretch.
Phil Graveline (Marshall, Mich.) picked up the shutout victory in net recording 26 saves for the win and the freshman is now 18-2 on the year.
The Panthers will compete next week at the GLCHL playoffs held in Ypsilanti, hosted by Eastern Michigan University. Davenport is the #2 seed behind GLCHL regular season champion Adrian. Oakland earned the third seed and will take on the host Eagles while Western Michigan and UM-Dearborn meet in the 4-5 game.
