GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport used a late rally to pull away from visiting Madonna 56-45. The win improves the Panthers to 23-4 overall and 10-3 in the WHAC. Davenport will next be in action on Saturday when they travel to Northwestern Ohio as part of a men's and women's double header.

Davenport came out firing, James Humphrey (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) each scored a layup in the opening minutes and a couple free throws by JaVontae Ford (Grand Rapids, Mich.) gave Davenport a early 6-0 lead.

Madonna got their first point of the game on a free throw four minutes into the opening half. Davenport held the Crusaders without a field goal for the first six minutes of the game until Connor Leidal made a layup to cut into the Panthers lead 10-3.

It looked like the Panthers were going to run away with it when a James Nelson (New Haven, Mich.) layup extended the lead to 18-5 with 10:22 left in the half, the Panthers largest of the first half.

Madonna wouldn't go away and a quick 8-0 run brought them back within five, 18-13, with just under seven minutes remaining in the half.

The rest of the first half was back and forth with Madonna taking a short lead after a made layup and foul conversion gave them a 22-21 lead.

Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) made a jumper with a minute left in the first half to give the Panthers a 23-22 lead which would hold until halftime.

Both teams struggled to make shots early in the second half with a Nathan Cox free throw being the only made shot in the first three minutes.

After a three by Madonna to give them a one point advantage, Davenport scored the next seven to take a 31-25 lead.

Davenport's lead was cut to one on a couple of occasions throughout the second half.

With Davenport holding a 42-40 lead, Zach Yeagy (Alexandria, Ind.) hit a three to extend the lead to five. On Madonna's next possession Darryl Nobles (Detroit, Mich.) came up with the steal and tossed it ahead to Cox for the easy layup to make the lead 7. Yeagy converted another three after a Madonna free throw to stretch the Panthers lead to 50-41 with 2:04 remaining.

Davenport made six of their seven free throw attempts in the last minute to seal the 56-45 win.

Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) (12) and James Humphrey (Fort Wayne, Ind.) (11) were the only players to score in double-digits for the Panthers. Cox added a team high 7 rebounds.

The Panthers will next be in action when they travel to Northwestern Ohio on Saturday for a 3:00pm conference matchup. The Panthers won the meeting earlier this season at the DU Student Center 76-68.
