Davenport Dominates Grand Rapids Gazelles 61-5

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport got on the board quickly and often in the Panthers 61-5 rout of the Grand Rapids Gazelle. On the night eight different players scored tries for Davenport. Davenport will travel to Indiana University next Saturday for an 11:00 AM start.

Jean Pierre Eloff (Pritoria, South Africa) got things started for Davenport scoring the try at the 15:50 mark in the first half. Eloff added the conversion to make it 7-0 Davenport. Six minutes later a Adam Ries (Morenci, Mich.) try and a good conversion by Eloff made the score 14-0 in favor of the Panthers.

At the 30 minute mark in the first half, Gabe Gallagher (Traverse City, Mich.) scored a try to extend the Panther lead to 21-0. With less than four minutes to play in the opening half, Erin Hillary (Grand Rapids, Mich.) found the try zone. Eloff converted three of four conversions in the first half and missed his only penalty kick opportunity to make the score 26-0 at halftime.

Davenport got on the board quickly in the second half as Lance Cavanaugh (Toledo, Ohio) picked up a Gazelle turnover and sprinted in for a try 30 seconds into the half. Just over three minutes later, Jean Pierre Eloff scored his second try to make the score 40-0. Reece Czarnecki (Wyoming, Mich.) added a try at the 15:20 mark. Eloff converted all three conversions.

Grand Rapids scored their first try of the game at the 18:10 mark in the second half but missed the conversion to cut Davenport lead to 47-5.

Cyrus Turner (Chicago, Ill.) and Bryan Ray (Rockford, Mich.) each added a try to close out the game as Davenport rolled to a 61-5 win over the Grand Rapids Gazelle.

The Panthers will take on Indiana University next Saturday at 11:00 AM in Bloomington, Ind. Davenport closes out the regular season with a trip to the University of Wisconsin on April 16th before traveling to the University of Minnesota in the opening round of the USA Rugby D-1 National Tournament.
