BLAINE, Minn. – The Davenport D1 Rugby team, making their first appearance in the National Tournament, defeated Minnesota 27-0 in the rain and wind to advance to the regional championship. Davenport will take on Kansas State in the championship.
After several minutes of scoreless play to start the half, Mason Baum (Osceola, Ind.) was able to get into the try-zone to give Davenport an early 5-0 lead. Lance Cavanaugh (Toledo, Ohio) would add a try to give Davenport a 10-0 lead heading into halftime.
Davenport came out strong in the second half with Lance Cavanaugh getting two more tries to complete his hat trick. Jean Pierre Eloff (Pritoria, South Africa) added a conversion to make the score 22-0 in favor of the Panthers. Eloff, having to battle strong winds and rain, made one of his four conversion attempts.
Angus Machellan (Traverse City, Mich.) scored a try late for Davenport to increase the Panthers lead to 27-0.
On a day that saw rain, temperatures dip into the low 40's and strong winds, Davenport pulled most of their starters late in the second half.
Davenport will now take on Kansas State in the Regional Championship on Sunday at 1:00 PM EST. Kansas State advanced by defeating Texas State 10-6 this afternoon. The winner on Sunday will advance to the Final Four played in Stanford, Cali.
