Errors Doom Panthers in 3-1 Loss to Cornerstone

Match was non-conference as DU hosts Concordia on Wednesday to open WHAC play

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - 26 attack errors and 12 service errors were far too much to overcome on Friday night in a non-conference matchup with cross-town foe Cornerstone. Davenport won the opening set 25-23 but fell quickly in the final three 25-14, 25-15 and 25-21.  The loss drops the Panthers to 8-6 on the season.

Host Cornerstone finished off a very sluggish effort on the part of the Panthers tonight with convincing victories in sets two-four as they improved to 12-1 on the year. DU will look to rebound on Wednesday when they host Concordia University in their WHAC opener at 7:00pm.

Set one looked as if the Golden Eagles would use an early lead to post the win but Davenport clawed their way back in and posted a thrilling 25-23 win after holding off a late rally by CU.

Sets 2-4 were dominated by errors and sloppy play by Davenport as they looked sluggish throughout in losing by scoring only 14, 15 and 21 points.  DU hit just .111, .000 and .119 in the final three sets with a combined 20 errors on the attack.

Post-Match Quotes - Head Coach Megan Garner

On mental approach to non-conference game - It's always nice to play cross-town rivals and we both wanted to win the match for pride before getting into the WHAC season.  This will help us prepare for when we see them in November.

On team's increase in intensity late in set four - "I really wished that was there from the start but unfortunately it was not and that hurt us throughout the match.  When our girls play with that fire and intensity we can do some really good things."
