Panthers Fall to Morningside and St. Xavier in 4-Sets on Saturday

Davenport falls to 6-5 after back to back losses

Morningside Box Score | St. Xavier Box Score

CHICAGO, Ill. - Davenport saw their five match winning streak come to a halt on Saturday as the Panthers fell in four sets to both Morningside (Iowa) and St. Xavier (Ill.) at the St. Xavier/Trinity Christian Invitational.  DU will look to rebound when they host Rochester on Wednesday at the Student Center at 7:00pm.

Match one saw Davenport take on Morningside who just came off a tough loss to the host school and the Mustangs made DU pay for it early with a 25-15 win.  Davenport recovered quickly however as they won 25-11 in the second to even the match.  Unfortunately that would be the final good news for DU as they fell 25-20 and 25-17.

Six Panthers posted at least 5 kills in the match led by junior Kassie Graves with 12 and Brittany Bott with 8.  Sophomore Nicole Chase posted a .500 hitting percentage with 7 kills on 12 attempts with one error.  Both setters, Amber Getty and Lexie Spetoskey each finished with 17 assists.

The second match saw Davenport get out to a fast start with a 25-22 win over the host Cougars and DU actually controlled most of the second set before struggling late in a 24-26 loss.  The late setback seemed to affect the Panthers for the remainder of the match as they fell 25-13, 25-21.

Davenport once again had a balanced attack on offense with Bott leading the way with 13 kills.  Kassie Graves had 9 and Kelse Moon joined Nicole Chase with eight a piece. Senior Courtney DePriest was solid on defense as she finished with 30 digs and Spetoskey dished out a team high 21 assists.

Post-Match Quotes

Head Coach Megan Garner - "We were confident going into today but we need to bring more intensity to beat teams like Morningside and St. Xavier who play such scrappy defense.  We are still doing a lot of things well but we need to keep improving day to day as we prepare for conference season."
