GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport posted a solid night at the net on Wednesday as they defeated visiting Rochester in straight sets 25-15, 25-19, 2518. The Panthers finished with 18 Team Blocks and a .252 hitting percentage to improve their overall record to 7-5 on the year with a home match slated against Illinois Tech next Wednesday at 7:00pm.
Juniors
Brittany Bott and
Kassie Graves led the offensive attack for Davenport as they finished with 14 and 12 kills recpectively to lead DU to the 3-0 win. Freshman setters
Lexie Spetoskey and
Amber Getty totalled 41 assists as Davenport outhit the Warriors .252-.030.
The opening set saw Davenport jump out to a 3-0 lead behind two kills from Graves and one from
Hannah Stone. The scoring runs would be a sign of things to come as Rochester did get to within two at 15-13 but the Panthers used a 10-2 run to finish off the Warriors 25-15.
The strong play at the net continued in set number two as Davenport tallied seven team blocks to grab a two sets to none lead with the 25-19 win. DU raced out to a 12-5 lead forcing RC into a timeout. The Warriors pulled to as close as 18-15 but back to back blocks from DU kept the margin and they held on for the victory.
The third set was very similar to what has haunted DU over the past few matches as they started very slow digging themselves a 7-3 deficit. Head coach Megan Garner's squad prevailed however and used an 8-2 run over the next 10 points to take firm control at 11-9 and they never looked back from there.
Davenport posted 44 kills in the match compared to only 25 for the Warriors.
Post-Match Quotes - Head Coach Megan Garner and
Brittany Bott
Megan on - rebounding from a slow start in the 3rd set
- "Picking up our defense was the main factor in that third set. Any time the ball drops on the floor without a lot of effort, it motivates the other team and we made the decision that it was not going to happen. We kept serving aggressively and trusted our teammates that they could put the ball away and they did that."
Brittany on - Playing at home after so many away matches
- "It feels great! Its awesome to look into the stands after you do something and see your parents or other sports teams cheering you on."
