Panthers Suffer First Conference Loss in a 57-47 Decision to Indiana Tech

Box Score Box Score

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - It was a battle of the top two scoring defenses in the NAIA, which did not disappoint.  Both teams held each other at or below their average for points allowed, but Davenport's lack of offense caused them to suffer their first loss in WHAC play with a final score of 57-47.  The Panthers now sit at 20-3 and 10-1 in the league.

The first half was a back and forth battle throughout with five ties and seven lead changes.  No team led by more than five points.  DU was able to finish the first half on a 7-0 run sparked by a Lonnie Fairfax bucket and capped by a James Humphrey jumper.  They took a 27-23 lead into the locker room.

The Warriors came out of the break on fire and immediately went on a 8-0 run taking their lead to 31-27.  Davenport would continue to keep it close throughout the second half by playing tough defense.  Their offense, however, could not keep up.  The Panthers converted only one 3-pointer in the half and shot only .167 from behind the arc throughout the game.  Their season average is at the top of the NAIA at .446.

DU also struggled to get to the free throw line.  They attempted only three free throws in the second half compared to 16 by the Warriors.  In the final minutes of the game Indiana Tech made some key shots to finish the game with a 10-point margin.  For DU James Humphrey was the leading scorer with 13 points.  James Nelson and Lonnie Fairfax both chipped in 10 points each.
