UM-Dearborn Shocks Davenport 8-7

Box Score

DEARBORN, Mich. – Davenport was upset 7-8 by UM-Dearborn in a back-and-forth game that saw the game tied five times and seven total goals scored in the third period. The game was tied at the end of both the first and second periods. Davenport had a two goal lead in the middle of the third but wasn't able to hold off Dearborn.

After a scoreless opening 12 minutes, Davenport and UM-Dearborn combined for four goal in the final eight minutes to send the game into the first intermission tied 2-2. It was the Wolves who got on the board first, taking a 1-0 scoring with just under eight minutes left in the period.

Davenport responded with a Phil Wendecker goal just over a minute later. Josh Munford and Dustin Wischmeyer brought the puck up the near side on a 3-on-2 Davenport break and found Wendecker on the opposite side to knock it in.

It didn't take Dearborn too long to respond, scoring less than a minute later to regain a one goal lead. With 2:52 remaining in the first period, Jeff Slusser put away a rebound off a Wendecker shot to tie the game at 2-2.

UM-Dearborn got on the board first in the second scoring 4:24 into the period. But the back and forth game continued with Brock Carlston tying the game less than two minutes later off a pass from Jeff Slusser.

Davenport took their first lead of the game with 6:20 remaining in the second period when Phil Wendecker scored his second goal of the game. Wendecker stole the puck in front of the net from a Wolves defenseman and was able to put it away to give Davenport a 4-3 lead. But Davenport wouldn't hold that lead long, 35 seconds after the Wendecker goal UM-Dearborn scored to tie the game at 4-4.

Davenport retook the lead just over a minute into the third on a Kevin Noble goal. Noble received a pass from Michael Bishop and split the defense for the breakaway goal he put in the top left corner.

Several minutes later, Bo Jacobs capitalized on a UM-Dearborn goalie turnover and scored into an empty net. On the play the UM-Dearborn came out of the net and tried to clear the puck but his stick broke the puck went right to Jacobs to finish.

After two quick goal by the Wolves to tie the game at 6-6, Stephen Flood scored his first goal as a Panther to put the Panthers up one with about six minutes to play.

From that point on, UM-Dearborn scored a power play goal and short-handed goal to shock the Panthers. The Wolves power play goal came just after Davenport got their fourth player back from a 5-on-3 penalty kill.

Davenport seemed to be in control of the game after taking a 6-4 lead after Bo Jacobs' goal. After the goal, Jacobs jumped into the boards behind the net breaking one. The delay to fix the board and a few minutes later when Davenport's captain, Ben Dykstra, was ejected for a check to the head seemed to take all the momentum away from the Panthers.
