Live Stats vs Cornerstone
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The end of a tough three-match road stretch comes on Saturday and comes against the top team in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) as Davenport travels to cross-town rival Cornerstone for a 7pm matchup with the Golden Eagles. The Panthers, who last were in action in a 1-1 draw at Northwestern Ohio on October 13, are currently 8-5-1 on the season while Cornerstone is coming off a 6-2 win against Lawrence Tech on Wednesday to improve to 10-3-1 overall.
Going into last week, head coach
Chris Hughes and his staff knew they had their hands full with three road matches in a row against three of the top four teams in the conference in Aquinas, UNOH and Cornerstone. DU has the opportunity this Saturday to finish that tough stretch off with a bang as the Golden Eagles come into the match looking for a conference title. A win by CU would keep them alive to repeat as regular season champions, but anything other than that would hurt their chances with rival Aquinas tied in the loss column.
Previewing Cornerstone – Saturday, 7pm – LIVE STATS
The Golden Eagles, who won the 2011 regular season title, are a senior laden team that features 14 players in their final season in a CU uniform. Coming into the week, of the 63 points scored by the team (2 points for a goal and 1 for assist), the senior class had accumulated 51 of those led by Brian Nimmo and Matt Osorio who each have 13 points. The goalkeeper, Kyle Breckan, is also a senior and was named the NAIA Defensive Player of the Week earlier this season.
Head coach Mark Bell is in his 15th season at the helm of the Golden Eagles program and his 2012 squad is looking at repeating as WHAC regular season champions as CU finished last year with only one setback in league action and defeated the Panthers 3-0 on DU's home field.
Davenport is just 4-9-2 all-time against Cornerstone with the Panthers having won the two contests prior to last year's loss at home. DU is only 1-6 all-time at Cornerstone and the Golden Eagles have posted a 4-1-1 record this season on their home field
After the Cornerstone match, Davenport will return home for senior day on Wednesday, October 24 when they host Concordia University. The Panthers then conclude their regular season the following Saturday with a road match at Marygrove College.
