Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After starting the season with ten straight games on the road, the Panthers returned home to take on No. 3 Adrian in a GLCHL match-up. With Davenport leading 2-1 after the first period, Adrian scored five unanswered including four in the last 15 minutes of the third period to hand the Panthers their first conference loss. Davenport will get Saturday off before taking on No. 5 Oakland in the first game of the “Good Luck DUck” series on Sunday.
Adrian was putting the pressure on early but
Phil Graveline, just as he did Thursday night, was coming up with some big saves to keep Adrian off the board. Davenport got their first good opportunity after an Adrian spearing penalty put the Panthers a man-up and
Matt Ogden took advantage. Ogden was able to finish off passes from
Tyler Quigley and
Robert Kleiman for the power play goal to put the Panthers up 1-0.
A few minutes later, the Panthers and Graveline caught a bad break as a shot sent high and over the net by Adrian bounced off the boards and off the top of the net before hitting Graveline in the back and ending up in the goal. However the Panthers didn't dwell on the bad break and came back with a goal 18 seconds later. On a two man break away,
Mason Bohlinger and Quigley complete the give and go perfectly as Bohlinger was able to finish on a wide open net to retake the lead for the Panthers.
The Panthers held their lead for most of the second period until Adrian evened the game at two with 6:20 remaining in the period. The Panthers and Bulldogs battled for the rest of the period and into the third with the score knotted at two. With Adrian on the power play, the referee's made a questionable no call on a Adrian high stick that led to a Bulldog goal and put the Panthers a goal behind.
That goal changed the momentum in the game as Adrian put two more quick goals on the board. Adrian added another goal late in the third period when Davenport's net was empty to hand the Panthers a 6-2 loss.
Davenport will be next be in action on Sunday when they take on Oakland at 12:30 PM. This is the first of five meetings between Davenport and Oakland to decide the “Good Luck DUck” series. The Panthers lost the series for the first time in six years last season.
Post-Game Quotes – Assistant Coach Bill McSween
It was 2-2 game early in the third, what was the difference in that last 15 minutes – “The whole weekend Adrian had been carrying the play to us and they finally got a break on the third goal and once the dam broke we weren't able to get the momentum back. Then they added a couple goals and we weren't able to get anything going to get the momentum back in our favor.”
With the day off tomorrow, what needs to be done heading into Sunday's match-up with Oakland – “We just need to step back and enjoy tomorrow. The coaches will learn from these past two games. Adrian is a really good team and they were able to show us some of our weaknesses. So the coaches will address that. As far as the players, we want them to step back, watch college football, and re-energize themselves for the game with Oakland. Oakland is our biggest rival and they are not going to take it easy on us.”
