FIRST OF FOUR: Davenport and Eastern Michigan will meet for the first two games of a four-game season series on Friday and Saturday in Ypsilanti, Mich. There will be live audio for Saturday's game on the Davenport Athletic Network (DAN). Davenport brings in a 12-4-1 overall record into the weekend and is 8-1-1 in GLCHL play. Eastern Michigan comes in with a 7-9-0 overall record and a 5-7-0 conference record. The Panthers are coming off a weekend sweep of Kent State while Eastern lost a pair of games to Adrian. Davenport and Eastern will wrap up the season series at Patterson Ice Center on January 25
th and 26
th.
PANTHERS VERSUS EAGLES: Davenport has dominated the all-time series against Eastern Michigan. After losing their first game against the Eagles, a 5-7 loss back in 2005, the Panthers have won the last 13 meetings. Davenport is unbeaten against Eastern Michigan at home (8-0), at neutral sites (1-0), and in conference match-ups (8-0). Davenport's lone loss in the series came at Eastern Michigan but the Panthers still hold a 6-1 edge in Ypsilanti. Davenport won all four meetings last season averaging six goals in those games while allowing only 2.5 goals a game.
KENT STATE RECAP: Friday, Nov. 9 – Davenport picked up their third shutout of the season in a 6-0 win at Kent State.
Travis White led the Panthers with two goals while
Kevin Noble,
Stephen Flood,
Bo Jacobs, and
Cody Walsh each chipped in on the scoring.
Phil Graveline stopped all 12 shots he faced to improve to 8-4-1 on the season.
Saturday, Nov. 10 – The Panthers used a pair of goals in the second and third periods to complete the weekend sweep of Kent State with a 4-2 victory.
Andrew Frank got the scoring started for the Panthers midway through the second period and shortly after
Michael Bishop scored to put Davenport up two. After their lead was cut to one,
Dan Zawacki came back with a goal to again push the lead to two. Tyler Quigly secured the win with a empty net goal with 22 seconds left.
Matt Sekosan got his first start in net for Davenport and stopped 13 of the 15 shots he faced to earn the win.
UP NEXT FOR DAVENPORT: Following the series at Eastern Michigan, the Panthers will start a tough stretch before Christmas break with a match-up at No. 2 Adrian. Davenport is 1-1 against Adrian this season. In the series opener, Davenport stunned Adrian by coming back from a 3-1 deficit late in the third period then defeating the Bulldogs on a
Tyler Quigley goal with 59.1 seconds left in overtime. In game two, the Panthers had a 2-1 lead after the first period but the Bulldogs scored five unanswered including four goals in the third period to hand Davenport a 6-2 (EN) loss.
SHARING THE WEALTH: Through the first 17 games of the season, 18 different Davenport players have scored the teams 84 goals. Fifteen Davenport players have scored at least two goals this season with
Mason Bohlinger,
Robert Kleiman, and
Tyler Quigley leading the way with ten goals each. All of Davenport's 21 skaters have recorded at least a point with Bohlinger leading the way with 25 points (10g, 15a). Eleven different Panthers have scored power play goals. Bohlinger and
Cody Walsh each have three power play goals to lead Davenport.
Phil Wendecker leads the team with two short-handed goals while
Matt Ogden and
Robert Kleiman each have one.
ROAD SWEEP: Davenport's road sweep of Kent State was the third road sweep for the Panthers this season having already swept Western Michigan and No. 8 Liberty on the road.
EASTERN MICHIGAN LEADERS: Nick Taurence leads the way for the Eagles with 26 points on the season. He has scored 11 goals on the season and leads the team with 15 assists. Bryan Kozlowski is right behind Taurence with 25 points. Taurence has scored a team high 14 goals on the season and has tallied 11 assists. Andrew Duff and Kevin Kissaw have split time in net for Eastern Michigan. Duff (2-5) leads the team in saves with 282 while Kissaw (3-4) leads the team in wins. Alex Caruana has gotten two starts in net for Eastern Michigan and has picked up two wins. Caruana leads the team with a 3.00 goal against average.
MOVEMBER: Members of the Davenport D1 Hockey team are participating in "Movember" that encourages men to grow a moustache during the month of November to raise awareness and funds for men's health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. The fund-raising efforts are being spearheaded by graduate student and Davenport goalie
Matt Sekosan. The Panthers will be hosting a Movember game on November 29
th when Davenport hosts Liberty. The game is also the final game in the “Blue/Gray Series”. Davenport Movember t-shirts will be on sale during the game for $15. More information to come as game approaches.
RANKINGS UPDATE: Davenport entered the season ranked 12
th in the ACHA D1 Preseason rankings and after dropping one spot in the third rankings the Panthers have climbed their way in to the top-10 coming in at 9
th the past two weeks.
