GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport held Marygrove to just 12 points in the first half on 5 of 35 shooting as the Panthers were able to jump out to a 40-12 lead at the half and never look back en route to a 83-38 victory.
JaVontae Ford led five Davenport players who scored in double-digits with 17 points. Davenport will return to action on Tuesday night when they take on Cornerstone at the Student Center.
Davenport was able to put pressure defensively on Marygrove early causing the Mustangs to turn the ball over on three of their first five possessions. During that span the Panthers were able to race out to a 13-0 lead. Davenport shot 44.1% from the field in the first half compared to 14.3% shooting by the Mustangs to give the Panthers a 40-12 halftime lead.
The Panthers came out with the same intensity in the second half holding the Mustangs scoreless on their first three possessions as the Panthers were able to go on a quick 8-0 run to up their lead to 36 points. The run was sparked by a
DeArmond Davis dunk to start the half. With just less than five minutes to play,
Dominez Burnett made back-to-back layups to give the Panthers their largest lead of the game a 80-27.
The key for Davenport was controlling the paint outscoring the Mustangs 56-8 inside. The Panthers were able to get deep into the paint and finish shots on the offensive end and on the defensive side Davenport was able to keep the Mustangs out of the paint and forced them to settle for outside jump shots.
The Panthers are now 6-0 under head coach
Burt Paddock in WHAC openers. JaVontae led all scorers with 17 points while
Dominez Burnett,
Gabe VanderJagt,
DeArmond Davis, and
Kyle Stidom each added 10 points for the Panthers. Davenport will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host rival Cornerstone University. The game is set to tip-off at 7:30 PM in the DU Student Center.
