Davenport Drops 7-2 Decision at Adrian

Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – After finishing the first period tied 1-1, Adrian scored five unanswered goals to hand the Panthers a 7-2 loss. Dan Zawacki and Stephen Flood each recorded goals for Davenport as the Panthers fall to 14-5-0-1 overall and 10-2-0-1 in GLCHL play. Davenport will have nine-days off for the Thanksgiving break and will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 29th when they host Liberty.

Davenport and Adrian exchanged shots in the early going of the first period with both teams trying to get a feel for how the other team was going to play. Just past the midway point of the period it was Adrian that would get on the board first to put the Panthers in an early deficit. But Davenport would battle back and tie the game when John Brooks found Dan Zawacki for the goal.

The Panthers and Bulldogs entered the second period tied 1-1 but Adrian got a goal a couple minutes in to retake the lead. The Bulldogs added another goal four minutes later to extend that lead to two. In the third period, Adrian scored 2o seconds into the period to increase their lead over the Panthers to 4-1. The Bulldogs added two more goals over the next several minutes to cap a five goal run that put Davenport behind 6-1.

Stephan Flood broke the Adrian run with 4:25 remaining in the third period when he scored off of Zack Blumke and Josh Munford passes. Adrian added a 5-on-3 power play goal with just over two minutes to play to increase their lead to 7-2.

Davenport will return from the Thanksgiving break to face Liberty on Thursday, Nov. 29th. The three week stretch between Thanksgiving and Christmas will be a crucial stretch for the Panthers as they take on Liberty, UM-Dearborn, Adrian, Lindenwood, and cross-town rival Grand Valley State.

Post-Game Quotes – Head Coach Phil Sweeney

What was the difference in the second and third periods – “They took us out of our game plan.  There was no rhythm to the game at all.  Anytime we tried to get things going there was another penalty on our side or theirs.  I thought we had a good game plan coming into the game.  There was no flow to the game and  letting ourselves get caught up in the penalties bogged us down, and we never recovered.”

What will you need to work on before the tough stretch leading up to the Christmas break – “We need to work on not getting beat back to our own net.  Adrian exposed that and we will improve in that area.  We need to stay disciplined.  A few of us got suckered in and we were frustrated and took selfish penalties.  We will be a disciplined team, because that's what it takes to be successful.  Those kinds of penalties will lead to guys losing their ice time. It's tough to say after losing 7-2, but I saw a lot of things I liked.  There are a couple of areas we need to work on, like our power play, but our dzone was good, our speed while attacking in the neutral zone was awesome, and we made plays in the offensive zone.  We need to get back into a rhythm and use our skills.  We need to make sure we concentrate on our own games, and not let teams take us away from our game plan.”
