Davenport Rugby Pool Play Preview

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport begins the USA Rugby Sevens National Tournament tomorrow afternoon with pool play starting Noon Eastern Time. Davenport faces San Diego State, Delaware, and Lindenwood in Pool F which many consider to be the toughest of the six pools. All of Davenport's matches will be aired live at www.YouTube.com/USARugbyTV.
 
Davenport will take on Delaware in their first match that will take place at Noon Eastern Time on Field 2. Delaware received an automatic bid to the National Tournament by winning the New York 7s Qualifier and they did so without surrendering a point. The Blue Hens easily took Pool C with 47-0 and 34-0 wins over Mitchell College and NJ Blaze Men's Collegiate respectively. In the Cup Semifinals, Delaware defeated New Paltz 45-0 to earn a spot in the Finals. In the Finals, the Blue Hens crushed Stony Brook 38-0.
 
Davenport's second pool play match puts them up against Lindenwood at 3:40 PM EST on Field 1. Lindenwood received their automatic bid by winning the Heart of America 7s Qualifier. The Lions blew past Missouri in the semifinals 36-0 and were able to get past Arkansas 21-5 in the Finals to secure the bid to Nationals.
 
In their final pool play game, the Panthers will take on San Diego State at 7:20 PM EST on Field 1. The Aztecs received an automatic bid to the National Tournament by winning the California 7s Qualifier. San Diego State defeated UC-Santa Barbara 41-10, SB City College 36-7, and Santa Clara 43-0 in pool play. In the Semifinals, San Diego State shut out Long Beach 29-0 and then in the Finals the Aztecs were able to roll post Cal Poly 36-12 to earn their bid to Nationals.
 
Davenport qualified for the National Tournament by winning the Qualifier Tournament hosted by Bowling Green State. The Panthers went 3-0 in their pool defeating Wheeling Jesuit, Cincinnati, and Ball State. In the semifinals, Davenport defeated Notre Dame 19-0. Against Bowling Green State in the tournament finals, the Panthers came out on top 36-12 to receive the automatic bid to Nationals.
 
During pool play, teams will receive three points for a win, two points for a tie and one point for a loss. The six pool winner will advance to the Cup Quarterfinals on Saturday along with the top two pool runner-ups based on record and then point differential. The six pool winners will be seeded 1-6 and the two runner-ups 7-8.
 
The Cup Quarterfinals begin Saturday Morning at 10:20 AM EST and run every 20 minutes after that. The Cup Semifinals will take place at 2:00 PM EST and 2:20 PM that afternoon. The Cup Final will begin at 6:30 PM EST Saturday night.
