GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In their last game before the conference tournament Davenport skated past Western Michigan University 4-1. The Panthers used a strong third period in which they scored three goals to secure the victory.
Bo Jacobs led the Panthers in scoring with a goal and two assists.
The Panthers came out sluggish in a physical first period. Davenport was given three power play opportunities in the opening period, but failed to capitalize on any of them. However, the defense held strong in front of goalie
Phil Graveline and went into intermission with a scoreless tie.
In the second period the Panthers continued to get power play opportunities and finally capitalized.
Dustin Wischmeyer opened up the scoring on a power play goal that was setup by
Stephen Flood and
Bo Jacobs. Western Michigan tied the game later in the period as they managed to squeak a loose puck across the goal line.
I
n the third period the Panthers found their rhythm and outscored Western Michigan 3-0. The first goal came only 0:27 into the period. Western Michigan goalie Aaron Shellberg was able to make two consecutive saves on shots by
Ben Dykstra and
Jeff Slusser, then Mason Bolinger knocked in the second rebound.
About a minute later
Bo Jacobs extended the Panthers lead to 3-1 after blasting a slap shot from between the circles for a shorthanded goal.
With 10:42 remaining Davenport took advantage of another power play opportunity and added a final goal for assurance.
Phil Wendecker received a pass from
Bo Jacobs at the point and riffled a shot that deflected off the goalies glove and into the net.
Davenport will be back in action on February 18 as they compete in the GLCHL Tournament. The Game will be played in Adrian, Michigan and the opponent is yet to be determined.
