GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In the final game of the regular season, Davenport was looking to complete a season sweep of crosstown rivals, but Cornerstone had different plans. They became only the second team this season to score over 80 points on the Panthers as DU fell to 26-4 on the season in an 83-73 loss.
Right from the tip-off, Cornerstone started attacking the Panthers' defense. They stormed out to a 20-7 lead at the 14:59 mark. Despite the slow start offensively, DU started chipping away at the 13-point advantage by getting to the basket. Davenport made eight baskets in the paint as they swung the score to 35-33 at the break.
After halftime the momentum quickly swung in the favor of the Golden Eagles. By the 15:21 mark they had built a 12-point advantage leading the Panthers 50-38. DU would get no closer than four points in the second half, but that came late in the second half on back-to-back layups from
JaVontae Ford and
Lonnie Fairfax. The comeback was stopped cold, though, as Cornerstone's Dan Possehl knocked down a 3-pointer to seal the victory.
Offensively, the Panthers were led by
James Nelson who had 23 points. Fairfax finished with 16. Davenport will enter the WHAC tournament as the No. 1 seed and will host the No. 8 seed on Wednesday in the DU Student Center.
