Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - With a game high 11 field goals today, James Nelson is now the all-time leader at Davenport University as he led the No. 3 ranked Panthers to an 82-63 win over visiting Lourdes.  Davenport, now 23-3 on the season and 13-1 in league play, will travel to Madonna on Wednesday at 7:30pm.

James Nelson needed just seven field goals to tie the career record at Davenport of 592 set by former All-American Nathan Cox and the senior from New Haven, Mich. hit that mark by halftime.  Nelson ended up with 11 on the day for a game high 31 points to help DU pick up their third straight win.  James Humphrey finished with 15 while Damacious White and Lonnie Fairfax had 10 each.

The last time these two teams met, Lourdes gave the Panthers all they could handle, but Saturday was dominated from the start as James Humphrey stole a first possession pass and went for a one handed stuff. A Lourdes basket on the next possession would be the closest the Gray Wolves would get all game as DU raced out to a 10-point (43-33) halftime lead. Late in the first half, senior James Nelson collected his seventh field goal to tie the all-time mark as the guard posted 17 of his game high 31 in the opening 20 minutes.

As the lead started to grow early in the second half, Nelson got the record breaker on a deep 3-pointer assisted by Lonnie Fairfax, which was one his Student Center record 10 helpers.  The field goal came at the 13:44 mark and put the Panthers up by double-digits where it would stay for the remainder of the game.  Highlighting the final 10 minutes were two alley-oop dunks from James Humphrey as DU had their largest lead of 23 on a pair of free-throws by JaVontae Ford.

Davenport outscored the Wolves 32-22 in the paint and forced their opponent into 19 turnovers with 14 of those coming off steals.  JaVontae Ford finished with 4 steals while White and Nelson finished with 3 each.

Post-Game Quotes - James Nelson

On setting the FG record - “It is a great accomplishment but like any other record here at Davenport, I owe it all to my teammates.”

On breaking Nathan Cox's record - “He was a great player here like everyone knows. He was a great offensive player and had a big bag of tricks so to break his record speaks great volumes.”

On preparing for Madonna with chance at WHAC Championship - “I feel like we are finally hitting a good stride with Wednesday and today's game. I feel like we are ready to go over to Madonna and do something good. We have been working on bringing a championship to Davenport since I was a freshman and it feels great.”
