GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a battle between the top two men's soccer teams in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, first-place Davenport scored all the goals it needed in the first half and had to play defense for a majority of the second to hold a 3-1 victory over second-place Northwestern Ohio on a warm Saturday afternoon at DU Turf Field.

Lito Esquivel scored the match's first goal, Dzenan Catic's 17th goal of the season was eventually the difference and Jai Maw added breathing room with the third goal.

The Panthers broke the ice at 8:05 when Omar Mansah dribbled to the end line and crossed to Esquivel in front of the goal box for the one-touch shot just below the crossbar.

A Racer foul on the upper left front corner of the penalty box allowed the Panthers to setup the eventual match-winning goal in the 22nd minute. Catic found an open gap in the upper left corner and was right on target.

Davenport took a 3-0 lead at the 37:29 mark. Damian Gonsalves took the ball to the end line on the right side of the Racers goal and centered it to Maw, who fired into the unprotected net.

The comfortable three-goal lead did not last long as the Racers answered with their first goal of the match 48 seconds later in an awkward way. From the left side, Alex Lackovic sent the ball to the right side of the Panthers end line where Jure Spiller had to reach high for it. The ball would arc over Davenport keeper Mirza Harambasic and into the goal.

The Racers returned to the field for the second half with a completely different look. Unlike the first half, Northwestern Ohio had most of the possession throughout the latter period and outshot Davenport 12-0 and took all six of its corner kicks.

Northwestern Ohio dominated the shooting category 20-7 overall, 9-7 on goal.

The Panthers will have the weekdays to prepare for a matchup with their archrivals Cornerstone at DU Turf Field Saturday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Post-Game Notes
Davenport improves to 1-0-1 against Northwestern Ohio…With his 17th goal of the season, Dzenan Catic has tied David Woods (2008) for DU's single-season record…Catic is also one point shy from tying Woods' 36-point single-season record…It is only the third time this season the Panthers have recorded less than 10 shots.
