SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Davenport men's rugby team had a busy weekend as they have two road games in as many days. The Panthers would come out strong in game one against Notre Dame. They would dominate the game from start to finish.
Gabe Sochanek would lead the charge for Davenport, as he would score three tries in the match. Helping lead the way for the Panthers would be freshman
Sondai Adjei who had two tries and handled the kicking duties in the game. DU will be back in action Saturday as the travel to Western Ontario to face the Mustangs at 6:30 p.m.
Davenport opened the game fast when
Gabe Sochanek would score his first try of the match, just 1:50 into the first half. With the absence of
Jean Pierre Eloff,
Sondai Adjei would take over the kicking in the match. He would make his first conversion to give the Panthers an early 7-0 lead. 18 minutes later Adjei would have the chance for a penalty kick and he would convert, as DU would go up 10-0.
In the ladder part of the first half the Panthers would go on huge run. The Panthers would score three tries in a span of eight minutes.
Vershawn Burke would score the first try 31 minutes into the game. Adjei would score two ties of his own at the 36th minute and the 39th minute. However Adjei would miss all three-conversion attempts during the Davenport, as they would take a 25-0 lead into half time.
The second half would open up the same way as the first. Sochanek would score back-to-back tries to open the half. Adjei would split the tries making the first and missing the second to have the Panthers go up 42-0. Adjei would have another shot to points on the board with another penalty attempt. He would convert the penalty to add three points for DU.
Head coach Kruger VanBiljon would bring in many subs late in game. But that would make no difference for the Panthers, as they would close the game with three tries from subs
Carl Smith,
Michael Houston, and
Joey Sok. Adjei would make two of three conversions as the Panthers would come away victorious by the score of 64-0.
The Panthers will be back in action Saturday as they head north of the border into Canada to take the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontraio, Canada. The game will be played at Alumni Field with kickoff at 6:30 p.m.
