ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Davenport overcame an early one goal deficit to defeat Concordia University on Wednesday which gave the Panthers their first ever outright Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) championship. The Panthers got a pair of goals from
Dzenan Catic who set the single season goals and points record at DU while claiming their 11
th straight win overall and ninth in league play. DU will conclude the regular season on Saturday vs. Marygrove at 7 p.m.
After claiming at least a share of the conference title last weekend with a win over Cornerstone, the Panthers entered the matchup on Wednesday needing only a tie against the Cardinals and they posted a 3-1 win to secure the program's first ever outright title.
Concordia (6-10-1) got the early lead when their player centered a ball and it ricocheted off a DU player into the net in the 18
th minute. DU responded with the game tying goal from
Dzenan Catic with just under 12 minutes to play in the opening half.
The score remained 1-1 until the 62
nd minute when senior
Jai Maw one-timed a shot past the CUAA keeper on a beautiful pass from
TJ Ifaturoti. That goal would go on to be the game winner, but the Panthers had one more score in them as Catic added to his record setting season with a final tally at 77:47.
Dzenan recorded his 18th and 19
th goals of the season to break the single season goals record (David Wood – 17, 2008) and single season points record (David Wood – 37, 3008). Catic now has 19 goals and 40 points.
As a team, the Panthers broke the single season goals record as they now have 53 (old record was 52 in 2008).
Davenport will host Marygrove on senior day on Saturday at 7 p.m. They will then have home field advantage throughout the WHAC Tournament that starts on November 9.
Post-Match Notes
Davenport tied a school record for wins with 15 (set in 2010)…The Panthers can conclude their first ever undefeated WHAC season on Saturday when they host Marygrove…
